Smart Lipo (also called Smartlipo) is a minimally-invasive procedure that uses the power of lasers to melt away fat in a process called laser-assisted lipolysis. In addition to melting fat, the laser energy also helps tighten loose skin so you gain a smoother, firmer-looking result than with traditional liposuction alone. Plus, the heat of the focused laser energy coagulates blood vessels, so patients have less bleeding, bruising and swelling compared to traditional liposuction techniques.
First, the area or areas to be treated will be thoroughly evaluated. Before your procedure, a local anesthetic will be administered and you may also be given sedation so you can feel relaxed during your procedure. A very small incision will be made near the treatment site to enable a thin tube called a cannula to reach the treatment site. The laser fiber will be passed through the cannula. Once in place, the laser emits highly-focused energy to target the fat cells in the treatment zone while leaving the surrounding areas unaffected. The laser energy breaks the membrane surrounding the fat cell, liquefying and permanently destroying the cells. The liquefied cells are then gently removed with suction. Once treatment is complete, the cannula and laser are removed and the incision is closed. Most procedures take from an hour to 90 minutes to complete.
You may have some activity restrictions, but most patients recover quickly, often in a day or two; more extensive treatments require longer recovery periods.
Smart Lipo is usually used to address stubborn areas of fat in the belly or abdomen, thighs, arms, and neck, including “love handles”, “muffin tops” and sagging jowls, but it can be used virtually anywhere you have areas of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise.
